Fishing in Stocked Ponds and Resume Writing From the Company Perspective...

Fishing in Stocked Ponds and Resume Writing From the Company Perspective...Fishing in Stocked Ponds and Resume Writing From the Company Perspective...Where would you rather fish, folks? In a big ocean with a flimsy rod and reel from a little rowboat, or in a small pond over-stocked with the best, tastiest fish on the planet using the most advanced fish finders from a comfortable boat (and, yes, lets say the beer cooler is stocked, too).Well, read on, and Ill tell you how the answer to that question is also the answer to the fastest way to find yur next job.Ive just returned from California, folks I love driving through that great state, and the opportunity to spread Ladders.com message all the way across the airwaves made it a heck of lot of fun. We should have clips for you next week, but suffice it to say we had great conversations on air in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco (and with papers such as The L.A. Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and The Wall Street Journal). This is an important part of what we do, because we work for you, our Readers. Our now 262,000 Readers represent the cream of the nations crop in sales, marketing, law, finance, technology, operations, HR, and every other discipline. And our job here at Ladders.com, which we take very seriously, is help you find your next job as quickly, as painlessly, and at the highest compensation level, possible. So getting the word out to more and more employers about Ladders.com is a great way for us to help get you there quicker. And even though were already the largest resource for $100K+ jobs on the planet, by far, we?re not going to rest on our heels while even one of our Readers is still looking. So why does Ladders.com work?Well, I was the SVP, Finance Operations at HotJobs.com, and led our sale to Yahoo in 2002. I learned a lot at the 2 job board about how people really get jobs. I also learned a lot about how people don?t get jobs. You see, the big job boards are great for middle-market jobs. T hese jobs are middling desirable and are filled by mid-level people. For the folks hiring and the folks being hired, at this level it works really, really well.Where the big job boards fail is at the high-level jobs.Because its free for applicants to apply, what do you think happens when you put a really great CMO job up there? Or a fantastic VP Sales, or CFO or Global Systems Manager job?Well, if youve ever been on the receiving end of a firehose (or maybe dumptruck is the better analogy), you?d have a pretty good sense of what recruiters feel like when theyre brave, foolish, or na Ive enough to post great jobs on those middle market boards. Wham They get inundatedNow, my direct phone number is still on our press releases (memo to self change that). But the happy consequence of this is that I still get a lot of calls directly from subscribers and recruiters. And I love to ask recruiters what they think of the system. To a person, they tell me Ladders.com is the greatest internet res ource theyve ever found. The candidates are targeted, the candidates are high-class, and the volume of applications is really reasonable (in fact, the typical job posting on Ladders.com only gets 15 applications versus hundreds on the big job boards). And thats why recruiters love us. Were free, unlike the big job boards, and weve got the best candidates on the planet right here. And thats why recruiters come fishing at Ladders.coms pond. Its easy for them to land the big one. Just like youd pay to fish in a stocked pond (or, I suppose, in this case, youre paying to be the fish in the stocked pond), recruiters post their jobs with Ladders.com because weve stacked the odds way in their favor. So happy fishing, er, nibbling, Readers. Weve got over 4,500 all-new jobs from companies all over this great land of ours. So lets get at it

How to Get Hired at a Socially Responsible Company

How to Get Hired at a Socially Responsible CompanyHow to Get Hired at a Socially Responsible Company The Best Retail Companies to Work for From sustainability initiatives to employee volunteer programs and corporate foundations, companies have increasingly invested in corporate social responsibility . Not only has this buoyed their employer brand, but its been an important tool for attracting and engaging employees, especially Millennials.Workers under the age of 36 are more likely to focus on a business impact on the environment or on society, and they are attracted to companies with a powerfully, positive social mission. Perhaps thats one of the reasons why KIND Snacks is a consistent favorite among job seekers. There has certainly been an increase in job seekers using a companys social mission or social responsibility commitments as a filter in their decision-making process. While there is a pe rception that this is something that is only important to millennials, we find that candidates at all levels and backgrounds are evaluating companies for the social mission factor, says Melissa Del Broccolo, Vice President of Talent Management at KIND . In his book, KINDs founder & CEO, Daniel Lubetzky shares his belief that social mission isnt something you can just tack onto yur brand with the launch of a cause absatzwirtschaft campaign. For job seekers, this means you have to have a critical eye when evaluating a prospective company . Ask yourself whether the company aligns with your personal values, interests and sense of justice. Then when applying, consider how you showcase your passion for social responsibility in everything from your cover letter to your panel bewerbungsinterview .If youre interested in working for a company whose social mission aligns with your own, here are Del Broccolos tips for how to really stand out as a candidate and get hired.Like many companies, we receive a ton of job applications every week. I think cover letters are still valuable as they provide an opportunity to differentiate yourself and share what youll bring to KIND. When a cover letter is customized and authentic, it can be useful way for a candidate to stand out. The best ones are highly personalized and will include a variety of details , ranging from your favorite KIND product to a story about why our mission is meaningful to you. Unlike your resume, cover letters can be used to demonstrate that youve done your research and elaborate on why our mission resonates with you. And, Del Broccolo, adds, steer clear of the generic cover letter - its a waste of time. I would discourage the use of gestalt/templated cover letters that you can pull off the internet. For hiring managers, those demonstrate a lack of creativity and care.We like to look for what we call culture add (versus culture fit ) we dont want team members just to fit in, we want to bring in peopl e who have different ideas, backgrounds and can advance and strengthen our team and culture. We are looking for examples as to how a candidate might add to our culture within their resume, but also during the interview process and from their social media activity.Del Broccolo and her hiring team look for clues in candidates resumes for whether they embody the KIND mentality. We pay close attention to how candidates talk about their previous employers and how they treat others. We take our no jerks policy seriously. The words on the page are important, but how they show up and whether they are authentic is what were really looking for.In both your resume and the interview process , KINDs recruiters look for candidates who are consistent. In each stage of the interview process, were assessing for a persons ability to problem solve, be agile, think like an entrepreneur, as well as passion for our mission, says Del Broccolo. Do your passions show up in a meaningful way on your res ume ? Do you speak about them genuinely and with sincerity during interviews? Are they reflected in your social media presence? Inconsistencies can help us gauge whether a candidates stated passions are truly authentic. In the end, your passion and interest in our mission should show up in some way throughout the application process, starting with your resume but also in your interviews, the questions you ask, your social media presence and from your references.Speak authentically and passionately about the mission and why it matters to you. This often means that the candidate can demonstrate theyve done their research and has a clear understanding of how we aim to make the world a little kinder.Interested in interviewing at KIND for one of their open roles? In the spirit of transparency, Del Broccolo shares exactly how her team approaches the interview processInsight 1. While our mission has always played a role in how weve recruited team members, we have continued to enhance and r efine our process over time. One thing weve recently developed to equip interviewers to have more meaningful conversations is interview guides. Our guides are informed by our values and, among other things, provide suggested questions for interviewers to ask based on the role and level of experience required.Insight 2. By asking a consistent set of questions, our interviewers are well-prepared going into each conversation and are able to engage more deeply about what matters most. After meeting a candidate, the interviewers come together for a debrief and evaluate not only the candidates technical skills but also their alignment to our values and consider how they might add to our culture. They also discuss whether a candidates passion for our mission was shared consistently and authentically throughout the interview process.Insight 3. Candidates will typically interview with a team member from outside the one they are being considered for to ensure were thinking beyond depart mental dynamics and consider their potential impact on our broader culture.Insight 4. We also pay attention to the questions candidates ask our interviewers. Thoughtful questions show that you have genuine interest in how the organization operations and passion for helping us bring our mission to life. Like a cover letter, the questions you ask an interview can demonstrate that you have done your homework.Insight 5. Reference checks are another important touch point that can indicate whether a candidate is aligned with our values and culture. Finally, Del Broccolo adds, candidates that rise to the top will be those who have fully leveraged these resources and as such, can clearly articulate what the company stands for and how they can help make an impact.

Pollen is getting worse, but you can make things better with these tips from an allergist

Pollen is getting worse, but you can make things better with these tips from an allergistPollen is getting worse, but you can make things better with these tips from an allergistBlooming spring flowers signal the beginning of spring, but for millions of people, they also signal the onset of the misery allergy and asthma season. Itchy, watery eyes sneezing, runny nose cough and wheezing are triggered by an overreaction of the body to pollen.Every spring, trees and grasses release billions of buoyant pollen granules into the air, using the wind to disburse across the countryside in an effort to reproduce. Its all about survival plants that release more pollen have the survival advantage.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAs an adult and pediatric allergist-immunologist in the Midwest, the onset of spring signals my busy season treating hundreds of patients for their seasonal allergy and asthma symptoms. If you suffer through the season, know that you are not alone. Throughout history, pollen has taken the fun out of spring for many. In faulen times, however, medical science has identified practices and treatments that help.Older than the dinosaurs, as wide as the worldFossilized specimens of pollen granules have been found predating dinosaurs and alongside Neanderthals. And, sinus and asthma symptoms and treatments are documented throughout history and across the globe. People just didnt know exactly how to treat the symptoms, or exactly what welches causing them. For example, over 5,000 years ago, the Chinese used the berries of the horse tail plant, ma huang (Ephedra distachya), to relieve congestion and decrease mucous production associated with plant fever a condition affecting people during the fall.In Egypt, the Papyrus Ebers, written around 1650 B.C., recommended over 20 treatments for cough or difficulty breathing, including honey, dates, juniper and bee r.Although Homers Iliad describes the loud noise of breathing in battle as asthma, Aretaeus of Cappadocia of the second century A.D. is credited with the first clinical description more consistent with modern understanding of this condition. He wrote of those who suffered thatThey open the mouth since no house is sufficient for their respiration, they breathily standing, as if desiring to draw in all the air which they possibly can inhale the neck swells with the inflation of the breath, the precordia (chest wall) retracted, the pulse becomes small and dense, and if the symptoms persist, the patient may produce suffocation after the form of epilepsy.By the time Columbus landed, indigenous populations in Central and South American were utilizing ipecacuanha, a root found in Brazil with expectorant and emetic properties and balsam, which is still used in some cold remedies today. Coca and tobacco leaves, used medicinally by the Incas, were later exported to Europe for additional exper imentation for the treatment of rhinitis and asthma.Aside from the plant fever described in China, the first written description of seasonal respiratory symptoms is credited to Rhazes, a Persian scholar, around 900 A.D. He described the nasal congestion that coincided with the blooming of roses, termed rose fever.Symptoms noticed, but no cause identifiedAs scientific advancement was stifled during the Middle Ages, in large part due to the plague, it wasnt until 900 years later, in 1819, that Dr. John Bostock published a description of his own seasonal allergies. But he didnt know what was causing them.Having suffered from summer catarrh since childhood, Bostock persisted in his study of the condition, despite an initial lackluster response from the medical community. In the nine years between his first and second publications, he found only 28 additional cases consistent with his own seasonal allergy symptoms, which perhaps demonstrates the lower prevalence of the condition at the ti me. He noted that nobility and the privileged classes were more often afflicted by seasonal allergies. This was thought to be the consequence of wealth, culture and an indoor life.Societal changes with their roots in the Industrial Revolution, including increased exposure to air pollution, less time spent outdoors, increased pollen counts and improved hygiene, all likely contributed to the increased prevalence of allergies that we continue to see today. They also helped form the hygiene hypothesis, which states that in part decreased exposure to particular bacteria and infections could be leading to the increase in allergic and autoimmune diseases. The source of seasonal symptoms at the time was also thought to be caused by the smell of new hay. This led to the coining of the term hay fever.Bostock instead suspected the recurring symptoms were triggered by the summer heat, since his symptoms improved when he spent the summer on the coast. It would later became common for nobility and aristocrats to spend allergy season in coastal or mountain resorts to avoid bothersome symptoms.Identifying the true culpritThrough methodical study and self-experimentation, Dr. Charles Blackley identified that pollen was to blame for allergy symptoms. He collected, identified, and described various pollens and then determined their allergic properties by rubbing them into his eyes or scratching them on his skin. He then noted which ones resulted in redness and itching. This same technique is used in skin prick testing by allergists today.Inspired by discoveries related to vaccination, Dr. Leonard Noon and John Freeman prepared doses of pollen extracts for injection in an effort to desensitize patients with allergic rhinitis in the early 1900s. This effective treatment, called allergy immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots, is still used today.Antihistamines first became available in the 1940s, but they caused significant sedation. The formulations with fewer side effects that are used today have only been available since the 1980s.Pollen counts likely to growThough recognized by ancient civilizations, seasonal allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma have only increased in prevalence in recent history and are on the rise, now affecting 10 to 30 percent of the worlds population.Fueled by warmer temperatures and increased carbon dioxide levels, pollen seasons are longer, and pollen counts are higher. Many experts believe this will worsen in the coming years due in large part to climate changeWhat can you do? Often, those who are allergic need a multifaceted approach.Find out what allergens are causing your symptoms.Take note of when your symptoms start by making a note in a calendar or planner.Minimize exposure to allergens.Track pollen counts. When pollen counts are high, keep the windows closed at home and in the car. After spending time outdoors, shower and change clothing to prevent ongoing exposure to pollen.Take a pro-active approach to treating sympto ms.Starting medications before symptoms develop can prevent symptoms from getting out of control. This can also decrease the amount of medication needed overall. Long acting non-sedating antihistamines are helpful for itching and sneezing. Nasal corticosteroid sprays are more helpful for stuffy noses.Consider a visit to see a board certified allergist/immunologist. She or he can help you determine which particular pollens maybe the source of your symptoms.Explore the role of immunotherapy with your doctor. Immunotherapy changes the immune response through administration of small regimented doses of allergens over time. This induces a state of tolerance, eventually helping people become less allergic over time. While pollen season is coming, taking a multifaceted approach can provide much needed relief from the symptoms that have plagued humankind throughout the millennia.Kara Wada, Clinical Assistant Professor, Allergy/Immunology, The Ohio State UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license.
